Original score and art direction for the ambient short film “Figure In The Desert,” directed by Joe McDonough.
“Figure In The Desert” begins with slight movements of an insect, which then transitions into a man slowly making his way through the vast desert landscape. Like the insect, we as humans aren’t so different in our struggle to get through each step, each obstacle, all to gain momentum to get what we want. The film’s simplistic, textural, and symbolic imagery highlights the imperfect beauty of the human body. As technology and media distract us from the present moment, this film seeks to re-establish our connection to Earth, highlighting the fact that we are ultimately at the mercy of Mother Nature. Our focus has shifted from environmental symbiosis to self-preservation, preferring to monopolize precious natural resources rather than live in harmony with our habitat. The setting proves to be equally important, showcasing the quiet beauty of the desert land, which ultimately shows us how easy it is to take for granted the nature all around us. The film invites the viewer to take in each detail in an unhurried and delicate manner.
Original score for the documentary short Eleanor Neal: Ancestral Voice, directed by Alex Zhuravel.
The film follows Eleanor Neal, a visual artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, throughout a day in her life. Her series of ink paintings are inspired by the history and literature of Ossabaw Island near the Georgia Coast. Eleanor contemplates the traumatic history of the slave trade and the people who persevered through their exploitation. She draws inspiration from the women who escaped enslavement and established free communities on the Gullah Islands near the Georgia coast. Their struggle to find strength and survive on their own in the wilderness of nature serves as an inspiration and driving force behind her work. Eleanor reflects on the history of her ancestors to gain a deeper understanding of her own journey.
